Clifton Surf Lifeguard Course
So you've seen our guys and girls in action and want your own red speedo? This is how you do it:
STEP 1: JOIN CliFTON SURF LIFESAVING CLUB
Get in touch with US to find out how and when to join. You will need to take a copy of your ID and if you are under 21 you will need one of your parents to help you sign up.
STEP 2: GET QUALIFIED!
If you are aged 8-14 years you will join up as a nipper and will need to complete your entrance exam to start training. Once you are ready you can do your first competency exam to allow you to compete.
If you are 14 or older you will join as a lifeguard. You will need to pass your Lifeguard Award or Qualifying certificate before you can join our volunteers on the beach but in the meantime our qualified instructor will teach you all the tricks of the trade!
30 years or older? No problem! Come join up as a Master and join our Ol' Ballies on the beach.
STEP 3: GET INVOLVED
Once you are a qualified lifeguard the learning doesn't stop! Make sure you join one of the voluntary duty squads at your club and join us on the beach. If you are over 16 you can start training towards your Inshore Rescue Boat (IRB) Crewman's and Drivers certificates. If you prefer the thrill of the first Aid Room then join up for one of our seasonal Level 3 First aid courses.
NIPPERS
Nippers are lifeguards in training between the ages of 8 and 14 years. Being a nipper means learning how to be safe in the sea and at the beach, learning basic first aid and lifesaving skills and getting fit and healthy!
To become a nipper you must pass an entrance test where you need to complete the following 3 tasks:
1) A 100m pool swim in less than 3 minutes
2) Tread water continuously for 5 minutes
3) Retrieve an object 1.5m deep in a pool
Once you have passed this test you will be able to join in all the fun and games on the beach. You can then train to pass your nipper awards will allow you to take part in competitions for your club These awards will test your physical abilities as well as your knowledge of water safety and lifesaving skills.
LEVEL ONE is for nippers aged 8 & 9 years old and comprises the following:
• 300m pool swim in under 8 minutes
• 75m beach run/150m surf swim/75m beach run in under 10 minutes
• 20 sit ups
• 10 push ups
• Basic water safety rules
• How to treat yourself for blue bottle stings, sunburn, muscle cramp, cuts and sand in your eyes
• Basic lifeguard signals
• What to do if someone needs help!
LEVEL TWO is for nippers aged 10 & 11 years old and comprises the following:
• 400m pool swim in under 10 minutes
• 100m beach run/150m surf swim/100m beach run in under 10 minutes
• 35 sit ups
• 15 push ups
• Intermediate water safety rules
• How to treat yourself for blue bottle stings, sunburn, muscle cramp, cuts and bleeding, sand in your eyes and heat exhaustion
• Intermediate lifeguard signals
• What to do if someone needs help!
LEVEL THREE is for nippers aged 12 & 13 years old and comprises the following:
• 400m pool swim in under 9 minutes
• 150m beach run/200m surf swim/150m beach run in under 10 minutes
• 50 sit ups
• 20 push ups
• Advanced water safety rules
• How to treat yourself for bee and blue bottle stings, sunburn, muscle cramp, cuts and bleeding, sand in your eyes, heat exhaustion, broken bones, fainting, The 3 H's and the recovery position.
• Advanced lifeguard signals and International beach signs
• Torpedo buoy rescues
• What to do if someone needs help!
JUNIOR LIFEGUARD AWARD (JLA)
Prerequisites:
- 14 years old on the day of examination
- 400m pool swim in under 9 minutes
Course Content:
• Basic Emergency Care
• Basic Anatomy and Physiology of the heart and lungs
• Recognition of potential victims and danger areas
• Recognition and maintenance of basic rescue equipment
• Duties of a lifeguard
• Signals
• Spinal management awareness in the water
• 1-Man CPR, recovery position and vomit drill
• Use of a Throw-line
• Torpedo buoy rescue without resuscitation
• Surf Awareness
• 200m Run / 200m Surf Swim / 200m Run in under 10 minutes
This award is valid for 3 years subject to an annual retest which includes re-examination on a minimum of CPR, Run/Swim/Run and signals.
JUNIOR QUALIFYING CERTIFICATE: As per the JLA without the practical water work.
LIFEGUARD AWARD (LA)
Prerequisites:
- 16 years old on the day of examination
- 400m pool swim in under 8 minutes
Course Content:
• Emergency Care - Level 2 First aid, Rescue Breathing, 1 and 2-man CPR, child and infant CPR protocols, recovery position and vomit drill, Jaw Thrust Manoevure
• Anatomy and Physiology
• Duties of a Lifeguard - Recognition of potential victims, Site management and preparation, Public Relations, Environment management, Natural and Man-made hazards.
• Signals including Helicopter signals
• Spinal Injury management
• Rescue releases - Drowning clutch, push-up and wrist grip releases, front and back strangle holds
• 200m Run/200m Surf Swim/200m Run
• Box Line swim (maximum distance 100m)
• Torpedo buoy rescue and deep water resuscitation using fins including placement on dry land
• 1 man drag & 2-man carry
• Malibu / Craft rescue
• Surf Awareness
This award is valid for 3 years subject to an annual retest which includes re-examination on a minimum of CPR, Run/Swim/Run and signals.
QUALIFYING CERTIFICATE: As per LA without the practical water work.
